Recent Events/Activities

This section will also be posted weekly. It may be used as a brainstorming tool, a forum to voice questions/concerns about events you might have coming up, and a great way to keep all of our organizations tapped into what is going on in the college feminist community.

  1. Feminists United is holding Clothesline Project Valentines Week. We asked all orgs from our school to participate and show how domestic violence affects their group... but alas we received no responses. It kind of sucks that something as broad as domestic violence was rejected by the student organizations. Aside from that set back we received open arms from our counseling center. They are helping us maintain the project as well as will help train volunteers. I hope this event goes well. We don't have as many shirts as I had hoped for due to budget cuts. Who knows...

Anyone have any good advice for Clothesline?

  2. Oh Oh Oh and I forgot to add one more thing...

this past semester we did a super easy but very affective action. We printed out little slips of paper that had the definition of sexual harassment on them. Then we compiled them into little booklets and handed them out to people as they came into school. We felt this was a great way to give women/ girls ( and men) voice on the subway or wherever when they feel they can not say how they feel after being harassed. So many people were appreciative. I dont know how well this will work in FLA but I think its a great action for those who are in Chicago. God the creeps on the subway piss me off!

    okay that is all

  3. Those actions all sound awesome. If you are looking for more ideas on how to demonstrate around street harassment, check out the Roger's Park Young Women's Action Team, if you haven't already. They are some incredible activists doing work around the issue. Also, if money is super tight for the Clothesline Project, UIC received a bunch of shirts from a company called Threadless. They donated a ton to us in 2006, and we still have a bunch left over. If you need shirts, we have blanks as well as shirts that students have created in years past which we could possibly donate to Roosevelt (if we get them back afterwards). I could talk to our FU presidents and see what they think if you are at all interested.

Just out of curiosity, what are the volunteers being trained for?

  4. OMG Stephen we desperately need more shirts. The national Clothesline people told us where to access pre-made shirts and when we contacted the location it was a doctors office. If you could find out if we could borrow them Roosevelt FU would really appreciate it!

We are having training for the volunteers because we want them to be prepared if someone is upset or has like an emotional breakdown from the display. Thats how they did it at my undergrad and its worked beautifully so I figured we shouldn't mess with something that works. Also there will be domestic violence advocates from the counseling center on site.
